A Murder Most Unladylike - Book Review!

Love Enid Blyton? The Naughtiest Girl in The School take you back? It takes me back definitely. I love books set in the early 20th Century, and this book is set in a school house in the year of 1934. It follows the story of Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong, narrated by Hazel herself. Hazel has moved from Singapore for a "good English Education" and Daisy enlists her as the secretary in their secret detective society. When Hazel finds a teacher dead on the floor of the Gym, the amateur detectives have their first case!

I loved this book, though it's target audience is definitely for younger readers. It would be lovely for 11 year old girls, as it also touches on the customs and restrictions expected of women at that time.
The narrator, Hazel, was such an interesting character and explains the difficulties of "being from The Orient" and also second-best to Daisy brilliantly.

The ending felt slightly rushed, as though once they had solved the murder (they actually manage it!) it just needed to finish.

To my understanding, there are another 2 books in this series. As I said before, I love the Enid Blyton-boarding-school element to this story, but there are definitely themes similar to that of Judy Blume also!

This book would be a lovely gift to a younger budding reader, but also to someone who wants to re-enter their childhood through the medium of story.

Do you sometimes like to read books that take you back to your younger likes? Are there any children's books that you hold dearly still to this day? Tell me all about it!

Thanks for Reading,

Ellie xxx
